This is the first of two issues that examine the state of gender in jazz studies. Collectively, the issues take stock of the field, critique continued absences and erasures, deconstruct gendered assumptions and abuses, and highlight areas for future exploration. While there is much more work to do, these authors offer promising paths forward for the field, even in the midst of a broader U.S.-American gender-based political backlash.
